Glucosamine is an aminopolysaccharide (a combination of an amino acid, glutamine, and a sugar, glucose). Glucosamine is concentrated in joint cartilage where it is incorporated in longer chains known as glycosaminoglycans and finally into very large structures known as proteoglycans. The proteoglycans function to attract water into the joint space for lubrication of the cartilage during movement. Glucosamine may also stimulate chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to begin producing healthy new cartilage matrix (both collagen and proteoglycans). In particular, N-acetyl glucosamine is the final form, which together with glucuronic acid, is polymerized to make the joint lubricant, hyaluronic acid.
MSM, glucosamine and joint health
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a metabolite of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), which has fluid-balancing properties. The role of MSM as a dietary supplement is as a sulfur donor. Sulfur is required for proper synthesis and maintenance of connective tissues such as skin, hair, nails, tendons, and cartilage.
Glucosamine provides the underlying structural foundation for joints, while methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) provides crucial sulfur compounds that are so important to maintain comfortable joint function. A clinical trial showed that a combination of glucosamine and MSM exerts better efficacy in reducing the joint discomfort and improving the functional ability of joints than the individual agents.
A proprietary and patented natural citrus and palm fruit extract blend supplies standardized concentrations of citrus flavonoids, such as nobiletin and tangeritin with demonstrated potent effects in suppressing destructive cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta. In addition, nobiletin limits the production of joint-damaging prostaglandin E2. A special Boswellia extract known as 5-LOXIN® inhibits the 5-lipoxygenase enzyme, reducing levels of joint-damaging leukotriene B4.

Dosage and Use

Caution
Do not take if you are allergic to shellfish. Tangeretin supplements should not be used by individuals being treated with antiestrogen SERM medications such as Tamoxifen.
